The thought of an African American as a president was never thought of in this Republican country. Southerners, or “Rednecks,” were shocked to hear that a black Democrat dominated the polls. Democrat Hillary Clinton, wife of former president Bill Clinton, also ran for president. In the span of many years, no one would consider an African American for president, let alone a woman. If anything, a black man would probably become president before a woman. African Americans have been “liberated” for decades, as opposed to women who have just recently got the same rights as men. As a woman, my boyfriend argues, she would have gotten assassinated early in her term, just like rumors that were spread about Obama. Either way, a black man and Muslim at that, or a woman president, would have been a conflict for the United States of America. Change is important to the US but ignorant individuals aren’t open for it. As Hillary Clinton realized, this nation needed change. Later on in the election, she went from running against Barrack Obama, to dropping out of the election to support Obama and his promises on change.

Fish Out of Water

Vanessa Diaz
Mass Com T/TR 12:00
Journal 5
Vanessad86@yahoo.com
Word count: 330

On October 16th I attended the John Carlos and Tommie Smith event in front Clark Hall where their statues stand tall. When I arrived there was a speaker already on the podium talking about how Carlos and Smith still have a big impact and their importance in the African-American community.

John Carlos and Tommie Smith raced at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City where one won the gold medal and the other the bronze. A statue of them resides at San Jose State University because that’s where they attended school.

Looking at the statue it’s noticeable that they are doing certain things that portray meaning. John Carlos wore beads that stood for lynching where Tommie Smith held an olive branch which stood for peace. By not wearing their shoes they symbolized poverty in black America. Also, Carlos has his left fist up which stands for unity and Smith has his right fist up which stands for power and their bowed heads symbolize fallen warriors.

While walking around listening to the speaker the majority who arrived were African-Americans. Going to this event I didn’t feel like an outsider at all since I’ve grown up with many different races. It’s been awhile since I attended an event where there were actually many people. I don’t know why there weren’t more races there. The event wasn’t only intended for African-Americans, but maybe this historical event has more meaning to them than another racial group. Attending this event was meant for different racial groups to come together and talk about how anything is possible. Tommie Smith and John Carlos are an inspiration to everyone. They stood up for what they believed. They made sure that at least two black people were appointed to the U.S Olympic committee. Ironically they were the two people who took two of the spots on the podium. People doubted them but they fought to prove them wrong.

Word of the Week #8

Vanessa Diaz
Mass Com 100W- T/TR 12:00
Word #8
Word count: 80

My Word: Debauchery

Source: Spartan Daily “The easiest money I’ve ever been about to make; At first I thought the people speaking were for the voter rally but that was a mistake.

The Democratic and Republican tables were set up across from Clark Hall. I approached the Republican table first just to see what information they would tell me (I’m far from being a Republican). They gave me was a McCain/Palin sticker and asked if I was registered to vote. At another table I picked up a few papers about what McCain wants to do about climate change, fighting crime, Iraq, education, etc.

After, I went to the Democratic table where I asked if I could have an Obama sticker. They told me I could only get one if I took a test and I quickly backed down. They told me it was easy so Nichole and I decided that we would team up. They asked me who’s going to be the next president and I answered enthusiastically that it’s for sure going to be Obama. Then they asked Nichole if I was right and she answered yes. So we both passed the Democratic test and got out stickers.

Word of the Week #7

Vanessa Diaz
Mass Com 100W- T/TR 12:00
Word #7
Word count: 73

My word: Proselytizing

Source: www.ajc.com
“MLK love letters caught in legal fight”

How it was used: “Cothren said he has advised Reynolds not to go forward with the project. The lead was about the bailout plan. It was about twenty paragraphs long with six different sources quoted. This is a very important story for our nation which led it to be on every major newspaper. Our country is going into a depression once again. The lead story did have photos. There were some with business people and others with Wall Street on it.

Television
On September 29th, 2008 at 5:00 p.m., I watched the news on CBS. The story was equivalent to 8 minutes long with about five different sources. The detail provided on television news compared to newspapers was different because on CBS they interviewed a few random people on the street. Also, different news reporters were giving their own opinion and had a few facts from governmental officials. Whereas, newspapers reporters have a list of people who they want to interview.

Web
The online source that I went to was AOL News. As soon as I logged on that was the first story that showed. Online news coverage of this particular issue compared differently in a sense that I got more of an understanding of what the situation was through this type of medium than the rest. It went more into detail on what is happening. The television news coverage was hard to follow since they kept speaking extremely fast. Also, they had so many quotes in such little time so it made it harder to follow and didn’t flow as well.
The story was about two and a half pages, not double-spaced, with about nine sources.
The writing style of the online information I found was unlike either of the other sources I read. This style was more of a story unlike a newspaper since it wasn’t in an inverted pyramid form. Each sentence wasn’t a new paragraph how newspaper articles usually are written. The online story went into more depth about what governmental officials think about the bailout plan. I also noticed that there were a lot more quotes since the story seemed to be longer than the rest of the mediums.
Online information is more current then the rest because reporters can keep on updating if they hear more about the bailout plan compared to the 5 o’clock and 10 o’clock news. Newspapers are sent out in the morning which they can’t update it unless they do it on the newspaper website.

Telling Detail

Vanessa Diaz
100W- T/TR 12:00
Telling Detail
Vanessad86@yahoo.com
Word count: 194

During the comedy show at the Improv in downtown San Jose there was this one guy that really stood out. It wasn’t a comedian but an audience member.

In the middle of the show out of nowhere this loud hyena laugh came out. I looked over to where it was coming from and was shock to find out it was from a 300 pound man. He must have been on the verge of being tipsy because he had mounds of empty beer cups as well as a few full ones waiting for him to guzzle down.

His date even seemed disturbed and embarrassed that all the attention was on them. Whenever he talked to her she had a disgusted look on her face. He probably had alcohol breath, which is never a pleasing smell.

The heavy set guy kept grabbing his napkin to wipe the sweat of his chubby face. The perspiration was non-stop to the point where he was swimming in a sea of sweat. It was uncertain if it was from drinking too much alcohol or from being nervous about his date since it didn’t seem like it was going too well.

Notes
Improv in downtown San Jose

observed a middle-aged man with a few friends
laugh was extremely loud

Sight
- Diversed group
- College students, middle-aged, elderly
- Middle age man with lady friend

Smell
- Smelt like alcohol/beer

Hearing
- the laughter of people especially middle age man
- extremely loud, overpowered everyone else
- people whispering during jokes

Touch
- Drink
- Held his date’s hand.
- Sat close the entire time

Taste
- Alcohol

Word of the Week #3

Vanessa Diaz
Mass Com 100W- T/TR 12:00
Word #3

My Word: Complacency

Source: Cosmopolitan, issue September 2008

How it was used: “I don’t think complacency is healthy.”

Definition: Noun.
1. It was presented on August 28th, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. He wrote this speech for the Civil Rights Movement to have African- Americans and whites come together and stop the violence and segregation.

From beginning to end his speech captivates me and makes me want to listen to every single detail. Every time I read the line “I have a dream” it makes me anxious and wanting to know more about what he wants. It’s a good piece of writing because by him repeating “I have a dream” it gets stuck in the audience’s head and will always think of Martin Luther King Jr. whenever they hear that particular line.

The whole speech really flows well together and he uses a lot of valid points but this section of the speech stands out since our founding fathers even wrote it on a document. "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'" By using part of history it just gives it more meaning because everyone should be equal regardless of their skin color or appearance. It doesn’t state any exception when men should not be created equal and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. shows a good example.

This whole speech has valid points and has good use of metaphors. It’s strongly written and never lacks grammar. Whenever I hear this speech it makes me emotional because one man had a dream to make this nation come as one and did so much in order to make it happen.

All About Me-100W

Hey Dona it's me once again. This is my third class with you so you must be doing something right. I didn't do much this summer except work. It was pretty lame I must say so. I was looking forward to Vegas since it would have been my first time since turning twenty-one but plans never went through. I work at Great America until the season is over. It's the easiest job that I have ever had although the weather sucks since it's always extremely hot during the days and freezing at nights. I'm a fourth year and still have about two more years. What can I say? I love school so much that I wanted to stay a few years longer. I'm majoring in Advertising and minoring in Public Relations. As for my academic focus I'm still deciding. That's the reason why I'm never going to graduate, or so it seems. I love listening to music. My favorite type of music is Motown, Oldies, and R&b. I also enjoy watching entertainment news. Yes. I'm one of those people who fill up their brains with celebrity gossip. I just moved into my first apartment and let me tell you it's been one stressful move but well worth it. Too much responsibility that I wasn't prepared for but I'm learning. I like to hang out with friends but keep it low key. I knew it was going to affect me especially when I saw the photos that were hung up of slaves being lynched and body parts stacked up in a pile. Walking through the tunnel it was not what I expected. I thought that it was going to be just how the hallway was with offensive words and a few pictures. Everything that I saw had an affect on me.

There were three parts that really stood out to me. The first was the statistics on HIV around different parts of the world. When I saw that it really frightened me because it seems like almost everyone has some type of STD. What’s more sad for me are the children who are born into the world with STDs. It seems like nowadays people are too afraid to get check because they’re afraid of the outcome but what I don’t understand is why they wouldn’t want to know? I would definitely like to know if I was part of the statistic.

The second part that had an affect on me was the part where they had offensive music lyrics. I was bothered by it because I do listen to rap songs that use vulgar language but seeing the lyrics posted gave me a different feeling. I was wondering to myself why do I listen to this type of music if it’s degrading to women. If someone every said anything to me like that I wouldn’t put up with it so why is okay for me to listen to it?

The third part that had an affect on me was the childhood part. How children get abused and molested and are forced to grow up fast because there’s no other way for them. I think this really had an affect on me because I have to nephews and I couldn’t even imagine if they were ever put in a situation like that. The video that was playing in that section was a normal looking man attempting to molest a little boy. It bothered me and I wasn’t able to watch it. Another shocking part was when they showed the Amber Alert and there are over 900 registered sexual offenders within a 2 mile radius of San Jose State University. That’s frightening because many students walk around campus at night and also there are a few elementary schools around campus.

Every part had an affect on me put those were the three that really stood out to me. I did learn a lot of facts while walking through there.

Broadcast Copy

The SaberCats managed to stay ahead against the Arizona Rattlers throughout the whole game ending their victory of 63-43. While looking around there were so many fans dressed in crazy attire. Some dressed in yellow and green from head-to-toe with colorful Mohawks, while others were in leather attire with chains attached. Some people take dating as not allowing themselves to talk to other people and some may take it as a casual thing.

So, where does dating draw the line? When people start to date they don’t take it serious because they’re just getting to know each other and enjoying ones company. But what happens after a few months? Is it ok to give your number out to other people or even go on other dates?

Well it depends on the situation you’re in. If someone has been dating for a few months and things seem to be going good and it can eventually lead to a relationship then they shouldn’t go on other dates nor give their number out; but if they do happen to do so it doesn’t mean that they are doing anything wrong because they aren’t in a relationship.

If they’re just dating for fun and it’s nothing serious than it’s ok if they’re being a casual dater. It is not ok to go on other dates when the two are being intimate with each other because the “relationship” is filled with more emotional feelings.

Even if the dating is fun and a relationship will never form but their being intimate than they shouldn’t cross the line by dating other people. It’s also important to communicate with the other person to see where you stand and if it’s ok to go on other dates.

Feature Outline

Idea: Getting more affordable student apartments around campus.

Who: On-campus residents, students who live off-campus (some that do not live walking distance from the school), landlords
What: How students can find more affordable ways to live around the school.
When: all the time
Where: apartments around campus
Why: There’s restrictions for students who live in campus especially as they get older.

Lead 5

Pipe fitter

Immediate identification lead: Duane La Chance suffered third-degree burns at a Springfield Municipal Power Plant yesterday.

Delayed identification lead: A pipe fitter suffered third-degree burns yesterday when he was installing new pipes on the roof of the power plant when he accidentally touched a power line carrying 15,000 volts.

Car accident

Immediate identification lead: James W. He was convicted of the latter charge and had served probation.
There was no evidence Rivera was a gang member, but police had been called to the house five times in one year for minor disturbances. "They really made it seem like the parents were really upset with me."
Hancock said that after paying legal fees, he received about $18,000 from the settlement reached a couple of months ago.
Mark Davis, an attorney for Ravenswood, said the settlement assigns no guilt or responsibility to the school district.
He said the district settled for two main reasons: Uncertainty about the time and cost of a trial and the difficulty of bringing in some primary witnesses who have left the district, and in one case the country.
The district would have probably prevailed in a trial, Davis said, because Hancock's initial claim for several hundred thousand dollars was thrown out by an arbitrator last summer.
Davis alleged that Hancock simply wasn't cutting it as a first-year teacher. I'm majoring in Advertising and minoring in Public Relations. After I graduate I'm hoping that I have the opportunity to move to New York since that's where I've always wanted to live.
I usually doing something on the weekends because I hate to stay home. I love meeting new people. I just turned twenty-one and loving every moment of it. I love music, although I can't sing nor play and instrument, I really enjoy listening to it. I listen to all genres but the two that I I listen to the most are R&b and motown.
When I was younger I did gymnastics for about seven years. The reason why I quit was because my coaches were always putting me down and I lost my self-esteem and some of my skills because they didn't believe in me. I switched gyms and my new coach was the opposite. He was delighted that I was on his team. He knew that I wanted to quit but tried to convince me to compete one more season but it was too late; the fun out of it was gone. Now that I'm older I regret quitting because I realize what gymnastics could have done for me.
