My Favorite Writing

By far my favorite short piece of writing is Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. It was presented on August 28th, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. He wrote this speech for the Civil Rights Movement to have African- Americans and whites come together and stop the violence and segregation.

From beginning to end his speech captivates me and makes me want to listen to every single detail. Every time I read the line “I have a dream” it makes me anxious and wanting to know more about what he wants. It’s a good piece of writing because by him repeating “I have a dream” it gets stuck in the audience’s head and will always think of Martin Luther King Jr. whenever they hear that particular line.

The whole speech really flows well together and he uses a lot of valid points but this section of the speech stands out since our founding fathers even wrote it on a document. "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'" By using part of history it just gives it more meaning because everyone should be equal regardless of their skin color or appearance. It doesn’t state any exception when men should not be created equal and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. shows a good example.

This whole speech has valid points and has good use of metaphors. It’s strongly written and never lacks grammar. Whenever I hear this speech it makes me emotional because one man had a dream to make this nation come as one and did so much in order to make it happen.
