When I was walking through the hallway before entering the Tunnel of Oppression I was already disturbed by the words that were written on the banners. I knew it was going to affect me especially when I saw the photos that were hung up of slaves being lynched and body parts stacked up in a pile. Walking through the tunnel it was not what I expected. I thought that it was going to be just how the hallway was with offensive words and a few pictures. Everything that I saw had an affect on me.
There were three parts that really stood out to me. The first was the statistics on HIV around different parts of the world. When I saw that it really frightened me because it seems like almost everyone has some type of STD. What’s more sad for me are the children who are born into the world with STDs. It seems like nowadays people are too afraid to get check because they’re afraid of the outcome but what I don’t understand is why they wouldn’t want to know? I would definitely like to know if I was part of the statistic.
The second part that had an affect on me was the part where they had offensive music lyrics. I was bothered by it because I do listen to rap songs that use vulgar language but seeing the lyrics posted gave me a different feeling. I was wondering to myself why do I listen to this type of music if it’s degrading to women. If someone every said anything to me like that I wouldn’t put up with it so why is okay for me to listen to it?
The third part that had an affect on me was the childhood part. How children get abused and molested and are forced to grow up fast because there’s no other way for them. I think this really had an affect on me because I have to nephews and I couldn’t even imagine if they were ever put in a situation like that. The video that was playing in that section was a normal looking man attempting to molest a little boy. It bothered me and I wasn’t able to watch it. Another shocking part was when they showed the Amber Alert and there are over 900 registered sexual offenders within a 2 mile radius of San Jose State University. That’s frightening because many students walk around campus at night and also there are a few elementary schools around campus.
Every part had an affect on me put those were the three that really stood out to me. I did learn a lot of facts while walking through there.
